Baby Alex Update

Alex is the 9 month old baby boy from Tierra Linda who went to the U.S. to have his cleft palate operation. This journey and operation was made possible by Children of Americas (COTA) Kim and her family have been lovingly fostering him. Yesterday afternoon, Alex’s parents, two grandmothers, one grandfather and three little cousins all crowded around the computer to look at photos of their beloved Alex. I had meant to take a photo of them looking at the computer but it was so emotional that I forgot about it . Everyone was in tears. There were lots of happy tears for how he looks now and lots of mother’s tears looking at her baby after the operation. I could almost feel her ache to hold him.

They watched each video two times and went through all the photos from the day he left Guatemala to the most recent photo. The blog that Kim has kept has been so wonderful for them to feel that they have a connection to him. They also were so happy to see a photo of Kim , Jody, the doctor and the nurses so that they could put faces to the people who were caring for Alex.

This family is so grateful. The father made a speech to thank us for helping Alex, they really feel that this has been a blessing for Alex and that everyone involved has helped with this, halfway through his speech of gratitude , the father broke down in tears and couldn’t talk, then all the family were in tears.

They all want to go to the airport to pick him up. Kim told me the tentative date for Alex to come home is July 24th. Kim has some exciting news but I will let her share that with everyone.

One thing that Kim reminded me is that this family does not have a real bed. Alex is now used to some very fine comforts and coming home to sleep on bare planks will be hard. If anyone would like to donate a double bed to this family it would be a wonderful gift for them.
