Kim and her husband Jay, and their own son, Alex have been caring for baby Alex for the past several months. Baby Alex had to have cleft palate surgery. His family had kept his face covered for most of his young life, they were embarrased to have people see his hare lip. They would put a cloth on his face when he was in public.

When we offered them the chance, through C.O.T.A. ( Children of the Americas) to be able to send baby Alex to the U.S. for his surgery, they were scared but they wanted the best for their son. I was honored that they trusted us enough to take their precious baby to a foreign country and operate on him and to bring him back.

This picture was taken of Alex on his way to the US and before his surgery.

Today is the day we have all been waiting for!! Alex is coming home.!! Kim has done a wonderful job keeping a blog , she has updated all the photos of Alex having a wonderful time. This has been a great comfort and joy for the family to be able to come and look at photos of Alex and to even see videos of him.

This is from a post that I put on the Mayan Families Connection group this morning.

We are all waiting to see Kim and Alex today!. His parents are very anxious to go to the airport and meet him. I know that it is going to be bittersweet for Kim. She and her whole family have grown very attached to little Alex and I am sure , that he is to them.

I think that it is incredibly selfless the job that Kim and Jay took on, caring for, loving and making baby Alex a part of their family and then after his medical care, handing him back to his family here. As Jody from COTA has told us, this is done with all the costs ( apart from the medical care) coming out of the foster family’s pocket. Kim is flying Alex back to Guatemala which will make the transition so much easier for Alex. I hope that her own son, also Alex, will have an easy time adjusting to being an only child again. He looks like he was having a lot of fun with baby Alex.

Alex’s family live in a very basic home, they do not have a mattress on their bare plank boards they use for a bed. They do not have any toys and quite often they do not have enough food. But they do have a lot of love for Alex and they cannot wait to see him.

This is going to be a big change for baby Alex who has become very accustomed to the luxuries that he had at Kim and Jay’s home. Kim is bringing a pack and play for Alex to use.

Alex’s parents are also expecting another baby in a few months.

Julio is going into the city to meet Kim and he will be taking photos for us to share with you. Julio will be picking up Aida from COTA and after they pick up Alex and Kim , they will go to the U.S. Embassy and register the return of Alex to Guatemala. After that they will head to Panajachel, Kim is staying at Patti’s apartments and Alex will head up the mountain with his parents back to Tierra Linda.

We are planning on visiting Alex in Tierra Linda on Friday

Berta Ben from Tierra Linda received medicines for her elderly mother. Her mother has an enlarged heart and respiratory problems.   Without the medicines she would surely die. The family cannot afford to pay
for the medications. Thank you for the donations to our medical program that enables us to allieve the suffering for families like these.

Euphemia is one of the several people that we gave medical care to this week.

Gabriella Coroxon is 1yr and 7 months old. She was born with a heart problem. She was born with two veins crossed over in her heart. She has been receiving treatment at the hospital in the city.

Her medical treatment is a very big hardship for the family. Her father, Gabriel is a builders assistant. He earns $95 US per month. They are renting a room and it costs them $55 US per month.

Each appointment that Gabriella has costs the family $10 US . Her medicine costs the family $17 US per month. The costs for them to go to the city and back, including their food for the day is $27usd.

Gabriella’s mother, Maria is 21yrs old. They have another baby girl that is 3 months old. Gabriella weighs 17lb. Her finger tips go purple as a result of her heart problem.

The hospital has told them that the operation will cost $2,740 for little Gabriella. Obviously the family cannot afford this. Young Dany needed a kidney transplant and his mother gave up one of her kidneys.

Dany still needs to take medication daily, it is very important for him. The medication is very expensive and the family really struggles to be able to provide it for him.

We found that there were many times when he was missing days because the family could not pay for the meds.

We have been helping them with the medications since then and COTA has now offered to send us a few months supply.

We are so grateful for their help and support.

This 13yr old girl from above San Andres is one of four young patients that we will be taking into Guatemala city early Friday morning to see the Orthotics specialist from COTA. We are hoping that there is something that can be done for this young girl. She is very quiet and very embarrassed about her foot. It is difficult for her to walk and she has to use shoes larger than her normal size.

Hopefully there will be good news for all of these young patients and their parents.

Angel left Sunday for Kentucky. His family took him to the airport, they were able to meet Rosemary Vance from COTA who was accompanying him on the flight and visit again with Aida from COTA who had done so much work to get Angel his visit.

Angel called his family later that afternoon to tell them that he had arrived in Miami and was waiting for his flight to Kentucky.

Dear Sharon,
Angel is great, I spent the morning with him taking him to first the
surgeon and then the oral surgeon. His case is a bit more complicated than we originally thought but we will work it out. He needs an external jaw fixator applied, several infected teeth pulled, and the piece of hardware surgically removed from his cheek where it is embedded. He is eating well, is his usual quiet self, and is very
compliant with care, questions and directions. We had a translator
with us today so that helped. The 2 surgeons are going to communicate and let me know the plan of action. I took lots of photos but am out of town for a few days and will post them for his mom on Saturday. Jody.

Alex is the 9 month old baby boy from Tierra Linda who went to the U.S. to have his cleft palate operation. This journey and operation was made possible by Children of Americas (COTA) Kim and her family have been lovingly fostering him. Yesterday afternoon, Alex’s parents, two grandmothers, one grandfather and three little cousins all crowded around the computer to look at photos of their beloved Alex. I had meant to take a photo of them looking at the computer but it was so emotional that I forgot about it . Everyone was in tears. There were lots of happy tears for how he looks now and lots of mother’s tears looking at her baby after the operation. I could almost feel her ache to hold him.

They watched each video two times and went through all the photos from the day he left Guatemala to the most recent photo. The blog that Kim has kept has been so wonderful for them to feel that they have a connection to him. They also were so happy to see a photo of Kim , Jody, the doctor and the nurses so that they could put faces to the people who were caring for Alex.

This family is so grateful. The father made a speech to thank us for helping Alex, they really feel that this has been a blessing for Alex and that everyone involved has helped with this, halfway through his speech of gratitude , the father broke down in tears and couldn’t talk, then all the family were in tears.

They all want to go to the airport to pick him up. Kim told me the tentative date for Alex to come home is July 24th. Kim has some exciting news but I will let her share that with everyone.

One thing that Kim reminded me is that this family does not have a real bed. Alex is now used to some very fine comforts and coming home to sleep on bare planks will be hard. If anyone would like to donate a double bed to this family it would be a wonderful gift for them.

A bed and mattress cost $160 US.

Yesterday morning, Julio and Oto left at 6.am. to pick up the young boy with cancer and bring him to the clinic for treatment. He did not have any medication for pain and he was in a lot of pain. We were hoping to be able to get pain medication for him and see what else could be done because he is not receiving the help he needs from the hospital.

Unfortunately, the family had sent him the day before to the home of a naturalist on the coast where they will be treating him herbally and praying over him. He will be staying there for a month. I am not against herbal treatments and I think that prayer has a lot of power but this young boy needs medical help. I am very sad for him that he has been sent away to a place where he doesn’t know anyone and is in a lot of pain. I also understand that the family are doing what they think is best for him. The mother said that if she sees he is not getting better then she will call us. It is hard for her, she is uneducated, she can’t read or write,she is very poor, she is relying on her elder sons to support her, her husband died last year and she is overwhelmed with the care of her son and trying to do the best for him. She has not received adequate care for her son from the medical hospital or the doctors and she saw this as an alternative to help her son.

This is baby Alex from Tierra Linda who, in conjunction with COTA ( Children of the Americas) we organized to go to the U.S. to have medical treatment for his cleft palate.

He has been in foster care with a very loving family and had his operation yesterday.

Thank you Kim, Jody and COTA for all your hard work to make this miracle happen for Alex and his family. Thank you also to Alex’s family who trusted us enough to give us their precious son to send to the U.S.

This 9yr old boy lives in a very rural area outside of Panajachel.
One of the teachers at the school that he used to attend sent his
mother to us for a wheelchair for the boy.

He has been diagnosed with cancer of the leg. He is receiving
treatment in the city. But it is very expensive for them to get to
the city and the family cannot afford the medications.

The father passed away last year and it is a very difficult situation
for the mother to try and provide the boy with the treatment that he
needs.

The last appointment that the boy had in the city, the family has to
leave home at 3.am. , rent a mini van to be able to carry the boy into
the city, he can’t go on public transport, the buses are too full and
his leg is very painful if bumped. They go to the hospital, waited
several hours and then the doctor checked the boys ears, nose and
throat and sent them home – without medications.

The boy is in a lot of pain, he is now experiencing pain in his
stomach and chest.
We are bringing him to the clinic in Panajachel tomorrow to see what
medical treatment can be given to him.

We need funds to be able to help this young boy, if you would like to

This is Angel, he is 17yrs old. When he was 14yrs old he was a
passenger in a car. The car was attacked by bandits. The driver did
not stop and the bandits shot at the car. A bullet went through
Angel’s cheek and came out his chin.

For the past three years this young man has endured a lot of pain.
His jaw was fractured. For nearly a year it was wired shut and he
could only eat through a straw. The family then got the next
treatment for him which was to unwire his jaw and then he had a mouth
of metal wired into him.

When the group COTA came down we sent Angel to them. They found that
after all this time that his jaw was still fractured and that his
teeth were rotting and abcessing under all the wire.

After many months of diligent work, Jody from COTA was able to have
medical treatment donated to him, an airline ticket arranged and a
foster family that is waiting to greet him.

We only had to cross the nerve wracking moment of getting Angel a visa
to the U.S.A . Because of his age it was touch and go whether he
would receive it but fortunately, thanks to the hard work and
experience of another COTA worker, Aida, Angel got his visa!!!

He is really thrilled to be going to the U.S.A. He is photographed
with his passport and his visa. Angel does not smile because of his
embarrassment about the state that his teeth are in. You can see in
the photo the scar on his chin and cheek from the bullet.

Angel is nervous but very excited to be finally going to get the
medical treatment that he needs.

We hope that when he comes back to Guatemala in November that he will
be able to return to school in January for the new school year. He
has missed so much school because of pain, illness and embarrassment.

We are so grateful to the people of COTA who provide this wonderful
service to the children of Guatemala.

We took these two young boys into the city on Friday to the opthamologist. The 9yr old boy has had a problem with eyes for the past year. They are very sore and irritated. Fortunately, his problem is not severe
and with medical treatment his eyes will be fine.

The 4yr old boy has already lost the sight in one eye and the doctor says that he needs urgent treatment so that he will not lose the sight in the other one.

We are going to make sure that he receives the treatment that he needs so that he does not lose that precious sight in his other eye.

We need donations to be able to continue with his treatment. If you would like to help this young boy please send a donation to our Medical program.

This mother was able to pick up a pair of crutches yesterday for her son. He has had an accident and is unable to walk without help. Thank you for everyone who brings us crutches, walkers and wheel chairs. They are really appreciated.

Last year we were able to give this young girl a second hand adult wheel chair. It was not in good shape but it worked for them.

Yesterday the family was so happy to receive a wheel chair that had been brought to us by Airline Ambassadors. This “new” wheelchair is a pediatric wheelchair that fit young Maria perfectly. It had cushions for comfort for her back and her bottom. The best thing is that the wheelchair has straps. The mother told me just last week at the market that Maria had fallen out of her chair onto the ground so she was very happy that this will not happen in this chair.

We really appreciate the people who generously donated this chair and the efforts that Airline Ambassadors made to bring this chair to Panajachel.

This week we facilitated a clinic in Panabaj with a visiting medical group from the U.S. Samuel , on the left – a recent Mayan Families employee and Oto on the right, he has been with Mayan Families for nearly 6 months now – helped set up the clinic and do whatever was necessary. They are photographed coming back from the clinic, stopping at the look out to see the view of a rare moment of dry weather over the lake. They are on the Santiago side of the lake.

We were so happy that there were two dentists attending the people in Panabaj. Dentists are very rare to come with the medical groups and they are needed desperately and we usually have way more patients than they can see. But this time we were very surprised to learn that the people in Panabaj have a real fear of going to the dentist. The doctors tried to convince people with really bad teeth to see the dentists but they refused. Instead of the usually 25-50 people a dentist could attend, they only saw 8!

People braved the mud and the rain to line up and wait to be attended by the doctors. Several of the women who helped translate Tzuthuil to Spanish were mothers of sponsored children in our school program. This was their way of giving back to the program.

Meet 9yr old Marlon. He was in 4th grade at school. He lives in a village called Los Robles near Patzun.

A few months ago he was at school and had a fall. They discovered that he had cancer in his leg.
He was treated a the Roosevelt Hospital in Guatemala City and was operated on a month ago.

Marlon’s father died last year. This family is very poor and cannot afford the treatment that Marlon needs.
He needs to be taking medication that it is really impossible for the family to afford.
One medication costs $35 US a month, the other costs $48 US a month.

The mother, Maria is 48yrs old. She had 9 children, Marlon is the youngest. Four adult children still live at home, the two brothers, 25yr old and 23yr old work to support the mother and the family. But they do not earn very much, one works in the fields and the other works as a builders assistant. They earn approx.$35 US each per week.
A 20yr old sister lives at home, she cannot find work and her 18yr old
sister is studying.

They have to provide food not only for their mother and siblings but also for their 32yr old aunt, Sebastiana and her five young children. They lost their father a few months after Marlon’s mother died and they have no-one to support them. She now lives with them.

Marlon also needs to be able to go back to the city for a check up but the family cannot afford the transportation costs . This is approximately $100usd apart from the medicines that he needs.

They cannot take Marlon on the public bus because of his leg. He is in a lot of pain.

We are urgently seeking support for these medicines and his trip to the hospital. If you can help , this family would be very, very grateful.

Medical Program

The Rosa Gonzales family was referred to us by the social worker at the local hospital. The baby has had convulsions and they need to be able to perform tests on her but the family does not have the money to be able to pay for the tests.

Josue the father is 25yrs old, the mother, Yessica is 23yrs old. The father works as a day laborer and earns $20 US per week. They have two other children, Esdra 7yrs old and Caterin is 3yrs old.

They are paying rent, $10 US per week. They have only one room. They are not making enough money to cover their costs and can definitely not afford to pay for medical attention for the baby.

The baby,Wiltman Nehemias is 7 months old. He started having convulsions a month ago. He has had two strong convulsions in this time and the doctors are concerned that he may suffer brain damage if
he does not have these tests and get the right medicine prescribed.

They need $90 US to be able to pay for the tests . They have an appointment scheduled for this coming Monday.

Medical Program

Jose is 6yrs old. He comes from San Antonio Palopo on the shores of Lake Atitlan. He has a problem with his legs. His parents have never been able to afford medical attention for him.He is able to walk reasonably well on flat surfaces but he has to crawl when he goes up hills or stairs. He cannot walk long distances, his father carries him on his back.

We are trying to find out what the problem with Jose is and whether we can get medical attention for him.

Alex is 8 months old. He was flown to the U.S. last week by Children of the Americas, to undergo cleft lip surgery. His parents have been very anxious to know how he his….his mother has been so worried about him that she has been unable to eat.
Yesterday they came to Mayan Families and went on a computer for the first time and saw the wonderful blog that has been created by Alex’s foster Mom, Kim. The blog has beautiful photos of Alex having a very happy time. There were two videos……the mother, father and grandmother poured over the photos and watched the videos several times. They were so relieved to see that he was in good hands.

We were happy to know that the milk received by Alex from the Infant Feeding Project of the Food and Milk Program had given him lots of strength and nutrition and he is able to be operated on very soon.

Thank you COTA , Kim , Carol and everyone involved in making this
miracle happen for Alex.

Medical Program

Little 5yr old Ingrid Mishel from Aqua Escondida is not doing well.
She has AIDS and we are giving her all the treatment that we can to help with the other complications. Her father, Nehemias has been by her bedside for nearly two months now. Her mother died a year and 3 months ago. The family did not know what caused the Mother’s death.
Ingrid has been ill since she was born with various problems but the family could not afford medical treatment.

Mayan Families has been providing medical care for Ingrid. We have also been providing support to the father so that he could continue to be by her bedside.

The father has now been tested and he is HIV positive. He is in very good health at present. He unfortuantely does not want to receive treatment so far. We are trying to get the other two children tested, there is a 7yr old and a 2yr old at home. We are most concerned that they start anti viral drugs as soon as possible if they need it.

Ingrid’s father wants to return to work. He needs to be able to support his two other children.

We are talking to a foundation that helps children that are HIV positive and with AIDS and we are hopeful that we will find a hospice that will be able to take Ingrid and give her the care that she needs.

On a very bright note – another family, little Elisabet was born to a HIV positive mother and originally she tested positive as well . We brought her back to the clinic to be re-tested, she is now 3 1/2 yrs
old and it was a wonderful relief when the results came back negative. We were fortunate that Elisabet’s mother was diagnosed HIV positive before she gave birth, Elisabet was born cesarian and both she and the mother were given anti viral meds. Apparently, babies can often test positive with the mother’s antibodies but if they are re-tested when older, when the mothers antibodies have left their system, then the results can be negative. This was the very happy situation with little Elisabet.

Baby Alex, 8 months old from Tierra Linda was taken to the airport by his parents and grandparents and bravely turned over to the wonderful people of C.O.T.A. – Children of Americas . He is on his way to a very loving foster family and they will be caring for him while he has his cleft lip and palate repaired.
It has been a lot of work by many people behind the scenes to make this very special day happen….thank you to everyone who helped Alex and his family.

Last night at 9.30p.m. this woman, Marta Magdalena who lives in Panajachel, called me very worried about her 22yr old nephew. He is deaf and unable to speak. He had been vomiting blood for two days and was suffering tremendous stomach pain. We arranged for a taxi to take the family to the hospital. Today Marta returned with the news that it was an ulcer that had burst. The hospital did not have the medicine for him. Mayan Families purchased the medicines and sent them back to the hospital. Marta’s family is very poor.

These medications cost over $100 US. and it was impossible that they would be able to afford to buy them.

This woman has been waiting for a wheelchair for several months. She was very happy to finally receive a wheelchair that had recently been donated.
We are always in need of donations of wheelchairs, crutches, walkers and walking sticks.

PANAJACHEL–I have just received wonderful news from little Ingrid Mishel’s father.! He just told me that her tubes have been removed and she is now breathing on her own, she recognizes him and is starting to make sounds.
This is a real miracle.! Last week the doctors told him that they did not think that she would survive and it was only a mattter of time till she passed away. Then they told him if she did survive that she would be in a vegatative state. Then three days ago he called me and told me that they wanted to take the tubes out of her mouth and put them in her throat because her mouth was bleeding. He was very, very worried and he has been going through all this on his own.

Her father was elated, he has been by her bedside now for nearly four weeks. He has been sleeping on the cold floor. They do not provide cots to sleep on nor blankets for the parents in this particular hospital.
Her father, Nehemias told me that as soon as he brings her out of the hospital, he is going to come here and build whatever we want.! He is a builders assistant. I think that he is still going to have his hands full looking after his daughter but it was a very sweet offer.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the medical fund. It is because of you that we were able to supply Ingrid Mishel with the medicine and tests that she needed.

AQUA ESCONDIDA–5 year old Ingrid Mishel has been through a very rough ride. She was unconscious for several days. Her father called yesterday to say that she woke up yesterday afternoon and was moving her legs and arms. She has been very, very ill and we have been in contact with the social worker and the doctor at the hospital. It is still unsure, to me, whether she is HIV positive or whether she has the full disease. Her father and brother are being tested but we have not received the news about them yet.

We have been continuing to supply this little girl with the medicines that she needs. She had a fracture of the skull, she had an infection in her cerebral, she had a urinary tract infection and a stomach infection – this is what the social worker from the hospital told me.

Her father is by her bedside the whole time, the only time he leaves , he comes to get money from us for more medicines, this is a 6 hour round trip by bus, ( He is a very good father, he runs to the bus, he runs into the office, I can see how anxious he is when he is here, he gets the money and runs back to the bus and then calls us when he gets back to the hospital ) all these medical costs are confirmed with the social worker at the hospital and he brings us all the receipts.

The father sleeps on the floor next to her bed. They do not provide a chair or a cot nor a blanket. He is just sleeping on the bare floor in his clothes and anyone who has been to Quetzaltenango knows that it is pretty chilly there at night and early mornings.

So far we have spent approx. $500 on medications for this little girl. We are fortunate that we could do this for her through generous contributions to the Medical Program. I know that without this medical help that they have received that this little girl would probably not be alive . When the father came to us he was completely without money or any way to raise any more money to pay for the medical bills. His family is very poor He is the eldest of a large family. He has many small brothers and sisters at home and his parents did not have any more money to help him with. The hospital would not have given her any of this medication without it being paid for.

I don’t know what her outcome will be. We are just trying to give her a chance. I know that if this was my child – I would want to do everything that was possible.

AGUA ESCONDIDA–Ingrid Mishel is 5yrs old. She lives in Aqua Escondida. She lives with her father, Nehemias Santay 29yrs old . They live with his stepfather and mother. Ingrid’s mother died 1yr and three months ago.

Ingrid has an older brother, Melvin Otonel who is 7yrs old. He is in first grade.

Ingrid is not in school.

Nehemias is a builders assistant. He earns $24.US per week.

Since Ingrid was born she has had a medical problem. It has been increasing with time. I am not sure exactly what the diagnosis is but the doctor in the hospital said she was very close to having a cerebral hemorrhage.

Last week Ingrid was at home when she started having convulsions, she became unconscious , she did not regain consciousness quickly, they took her to the hospital. They did several blood tests, urine and feces – Nehemias was able to pay for these. They decided that Ingrid needed to have cerebral examinations that they were not able to perform in the Solola hospital. They do not have the equipment.

Ingrid has to be sent to the city. The ambulance goes once a week.

It is going tomorrow with Ingrid, her father and another patient.

But Ingrid’s father did not have the money to pay the $110 US needed for the examinations in the city.

He happened to talk to a woman who was minding her daughter in the next bed. Mayan Families had helped her daughter. She gave him our phone number and we told him to come down and talk to us.

We confirmed the story with the hospital and Oto went back to the hospital with Nehemias to take photos of Ingrid.

Nehemias is very worried about his daughter, he stopped work to take care of her in the hospital and he has lost his job.

Ingrid will probably be admitted to the hospital Roosevelt in Guatemala City.
